成年雄性东北虎体长可达220cm，平均体重165-180kg。东北虎主要在夏季繁殖，新生东北虎幼仔前1至2个月都待在位于悬崖附近的洞穴内，通常在19个月大前一直跟母虎一起生活。东北虎喜欢在红松、蒙古栎等形成的混交林，以及山势较平缓的区域活动，但通常对各种生境表现出相对较低的选择性，各种生境都有可能出现。东北虎主要捕食野猪、马鹿等大型有蹄类动物，自然猎物缺乏会导致大型猫科动物进入人类居住区捕食家畜作为食物，引发与人之间的冲突。东北虎一般在凌晨和黄昏时段活动较为频繁，日间活动相对较少。

与其他大型猫科动物相比，东北虎能够容忍与人类共存，并不具有非常强的攻击性。当与人类相距较近时，东北虎常避免直接相遇并快速离开，很少表现出主动攻击性，但在患病、受伤、捕食和保护幼仔时会变得极具攻击性，林区人员应特别注意对患病或受伤虎、幼崽以及捕食点的回避。最常见的人虎冲突发生在居民区或牧场袭击宠物或家畜的时候，偷盗猎和交通冲突也是主要的冲突类型。
